Nicholas Gauger 1829-1894

Nicholas Gauger was born on August 3, 1829 to Daniel and Susan Bower Gauger. Nicholas was listed as one of the original voters in the borough in 1868 and according to the 1870 census lived with his wife Sarah, born June 9, 1834 and the following children: Harry,16; Katie, 12; Willie, 8; George, 6; Bertie, 4; and Edward, 1.  In the 1880 census another daughter was listed, Mary M., 7.

Nicholas was elected to council in 1868 and was elected Chief Burgess on February 14, 1869, the third individual to hold that office. During his term as Burgess, a bell was purchased for the "Oley" school house.

Sarah died on January 28, 1894 at the age of 59. A few months later Nicholas travelled to Philadelphia to undergo treatment for stomach trouble that he had been suffering. An operation was performed from which he never rallied. Nicholas died exactly four months after his wife on May 28, 1894. They are buried at Watsontown Cemetery. According to The Record and Star, he was a quiet, unassuming man, a carpenter and builder by trade, and highly esteemed by all who knew him. He left a large of family of adult children to mourn the loss of a kind and indulgent father.

I’ve been researching this family (Nicholas’ sister Nancy Seidel was my g-g-g grandmother) and would love to hear from any descendants of Nicholas and Sarah.
