WILLIAM A. NICELY 1848-1939

William A. Nicely was born on a farm in Delaware Township on February 20, 1848.  He began his young career in the grain business at Dewart.  He applied for the position of cashier at the Watsontown National Bank in 1900 and served until his death.

William married Rebecca in 1882.  Rebecca was born on January ?, 1860.  Her father was born in England.  William and Rebecca had three children: Amy, b. July 1883; Charles, b. December 1886; and Mabel, b. November 1888. 

William A. Nicely was elected Chief Burgess in 1898 and 1899.

Mr. Nicely was a member of the I.O.O.F., Royal Arcanum, Artisans’ Order of Mutual Protection, Watsontown Lodge, No. 401, F. & A.M. having been raised a Master Mason on October 10, 1883 and resigning May 10, 1911 having served as treasurer from 1897 to 1899 and secretary from 1900 to 1902, the Warrior Run Royal Arch Chapter, and the Mt. Herman Commandery K.T. at Sunbury.  He was a member of the Lutheran church acting as trustee of the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg and the Odd Fellows’ Orphanage at Sunbury. 

After his wife died sometime prior to 1920, William lived with his daughter Amy and her husband David Bly at 301 Main Street.  William died sometime after 1930.
