Have a photo of a medal(?) with Harrisville Castle No. 9 K.G.E.
    Instituted Apr. 14, 1894
What was it for and how to find recipient in my family
Comment by James Robison: Not sure what to suggest to you regarding your family’s association with Harrisville ~ K.G.E. is Knights of the Golden Eagle and the local organization was named Freeland Castle and was instituted on November 3, 1887.
The national organization was founded in 1873 in Baltimore, MD and had a militaristic/Christian perspective in its rituals and ceremonies. There were three degrees based on events and legends surrounding the Crusades of the Middle Ages: The First or Pilgrims’ Degree, The Second or Knights’ Degree, and The Third or Crusaders’ Degree. According to Axelrod’s International Encyclopedia of Secret Societies and Fraternal Orders the organization went extinct sometime during the 1960s-70s, however, current research has shown that this group is still active in three states providing scholarships to college students. One unfortunate piece of history that over shadowed the KGE was that one of their members was responsible for the assassination of President William McKinley. The woman’s auxiliary was called the Ladies of the Golden Eagle.
